I composed Fanfare for Claus as a part of a writing project I started at the begining of the lockdown when it became clear that COVID restrictions were cancelling all of my upcoming arranging projects. For the first time in a long time I didn't need to spend the vast majority of my writing time working for other people. I had time to experiment, to try new things, and write some music that I might not normally write. I thought I would do something I've been telling my students to do for years but hadn't done myself since I was in college. The assignment is to write music from the perspective of a composer you admire to see how their language fits into your own.

Over the lockdown I wrote a handful of pieces from the perspective of composers I admire. Fanfare for Claus was written with Claus Ogerman in mind but is not an attempt to sound exactly like something Claus Ogerman would have written - It is a meditation on how one specific composer's music has affected me.
